User Reviews about Skylink SC-1000 Complete Wireless Alarm System

i've had this system for about a year now, and it works great. Sensors were easy to program and install. I recommend you first pair the dialer with the main unit, and then
program the sensors all in one place before you install them around the house. It makes the set up easier. In one year we've only had one false alarm, our dog set off the motion detector. Now we lock up the dog in the master bedroom and not the kitchen.
The main unit is loud when it alarms, just a heads up. Overall, a really good system for the price. Once the set is done correctly, it's a no brainer. The system is so good,
i bought one for my brother-in-law for his new house. -- for price, best system out there
I had an old ADT wired alarm system at my house. After a repeated number of false alarms, I decided to replace it.
I purchased a Skylink system. I used the existing wiring of the windows and doors (in series) in the lower floor of the house, attached to one sensor at the end. I replaced the 12V battery of the sensor with a transformer (output 12V 2 amp) so that I do not have to worry about the battery getting weak. I repeated the exact same thing with the top floor.
This way I can test each floor by opening just one of the windows (or doors) connected to that floor (or series) and use the test chime, instead of the actual alarm, to make sure that the circuit is closed. (The chime goes off when the closed circuit is interupted by opening the door or window, thus separating the contacts).
I used all the contacts available to me as needed.
I used transformers that usually come with hard disks, since I only use one or two at a time.
Drawbacks of the system.
1- The Keypad is not illuminated (minor).
2- The system forgets the assigned zoning occasionally, and you may have the alarm 'armed', but the sensors are not connected. So you have to check every now and then, to verify that the sensors are connected and not 'forgotten'
3- You can arm the system with an open circuit !!!!!!!!!!! There is no indicator on the keypad to verify the status of the zones. (My old alarm had a light indicating that the circuits are closed, in each zone before arming. The chime in this alarm will not sound with an open circuit, when you test it with the chime, but it will arm.
In spite of the fact that there are many things to consider, checking each zone in the alarm takes a few seconds, but an indicator light to rule out an open circuit in a zone, in the key pad would help a lot.
Checking the status of the alarm is very easy simple and quick for someone who understands how it works, but not for the lady of the house who was used to confirm the status by the indicators on the keypad, before leaving the house.
-- Very good alarm system that could be improved.
This is a great system. Extremely easy to install, program, and customize to fit your needs. This was a great find that makes me and my family feel safer and will notify us of trouble when we're not at home. This is one of my best buys from Amazon, and I'd do it again without hesitation. This if far preferable to a monitored service that calls you the same as this does. The only difference is that they will then notify the police.

I can tell you, being a cop, we largely ignore most of the reported alarms. We get there, but we take our time in doing so, because the VAST majority of alarms triggered are false and a waste of our time. Now, it is much different if someone is on scene calling in a break-in (such as a neighbor w/ this system). If you set this up right and get a trusted neighbor involved, the $40/month (w/ $99 installation) services are a waste of money. -- Would buy again in a heartbeat
I've had this system for about a couple of months now. I must say I am quite happy. Here are some specific comments in so specific order.

1) False Alarms : None so far for me.

2) Dialer Settings: A lot of reviewers here seem to have had issues with different sensors speaking to the dialer directly. It can be configured such that only the base unit speaks with the dialer. The instructions are not clear. Refer to other people's helpful reviews here for instructions.

3) Installation time: It took me about 4 hours total to install the system completely (over a couple of different days).

4) Motion Sensor: I hadn't expected it earlier, but the motion sensor is the most useful sensor in my opinion. I have it set up to "monitor" 4 windows at highest sensitivity at the same time. I test it every couple of weeks, and it catches the slightest movement. And I have the sensor programmed in zone 3/4, which means the base goes off immediately (2 seconds) after a movement is detected. I turn the alarm on every night with this setting and it gives me some peace of mind.

5) Door sensors: The door sensors are just about okay at best. Certainly useless for a window.

6) Volume: The alarm volume is loud enough to discourage any potential intruders.

7) Dialer: The dialer seems like a useful thing though I haven't yet found the right people it should dial (except my own cell phone). I am too worried about false alarms in the middle of the night to bother my friends/family/neighbors. Maybe if one of my neighbors gets the same system some day ....

8) Potential Additions: Some day I might get another sensor and may be another alarm unit.

9) Overall Experience: I haven't used any other security systems before, but based on everything else that was available at the time I was researching this, I think it's a fairly useful thing to have at this price point.

10) Negatives: I am holding back one star for two reasons. Unclear instructions for dialer, and I don't know how long would this last. I have no reason to doubt it's life span, just that I haven't had it for long enough yet to say anything with confidence.
